Film Transfer Workflow
Inspect & Clean
At Coppolo Studios, we begin every film transfer with a meticulous inspection and hand-cleaning process. Your film is gently cleaned using a safe, professional-grade solution designed specifically for archival film. This is the same solution trusted by professional film archives, and it not only removes dust, dirt, and debris before transferring but also helps condition the film itself. By renewing the emulsion and lubricating the surface, the treatment reduces wear during playback and prevents further deterioration over time.
Each reel is examined for splices, warping, or other damage, and if needed, repairs are made before the transfer begins. This step prevents interruptions during scanning and ensures smooth, continuous playback. Our careful preparation often reveals hidden detail that would otherwise remain obscured, allowing your digitized film to shine with improved clarity. This extra care ensures your film is not only digitized in the best possible condition but also preserved for generations to come.
Repair & Restore
During this stage, we also assess for any physical damage—repairing crimped or torn sections and splicing separated pieces whenever possible*. If your film is warped or heavily crimped, we often take the extra step to carefully straighten and restore the film so it can run smoothly through our transfer system. We’ve even had success removing mold from film, helping to recover images that might otherwise have been lost. If your film is missing its original leader, we attach a new safety leader to ensure smooth handling and protection during the transfer process.
Every repair is completed by hand, using professional splicing tapes and tools specifically designed for archival film. This careful attention prevents damage during scanning and preserves the integrity of your footage. In cases where the emulsion has begun to separate, we take steps to stabilize the film, ensuring that valuable frames are not lost during transfer. Our goal is always to recover as much of the original material as possible, even from reels that may look too far gone.
*Minor film repairs are always included at no extra charge. If your film has severe damage that requires extensive work, we’ll provide a custom quote before proceeding.
Capture & Digitize
Whether it’s Regular 8, Super 8, or 16mm, every reel entrusted to us is transferred using professional film-to-digital telecine equipment designed specifically for archival preservation. Unlike basic projector transfers that can crop the image or introduce distortion, our system captures the entire film frame—often revealing more of the original picture—without flicker, warping, or blown-out highlights. The result is a natural, true-to-life representation of your film, just as it was meant to be seen.
Your film is illuminated using a cool, flicker-free LED light source rather than hot projector bulbs, eliminating the risk of heat damage and ensuring even, balanced exposure from edge to edge. This gentle, controlled process protects your originals while producing clean, stable images with consistent color and brightness.
Every film we transfer is professionally captured using a 4K-capable cinema camera and precision optics to extract the maximum detail from your original film. That high-resolution capture is then carefully downsampled and mastered in Full HD (1080p), producing a beautifully clean, sharp, and stable image optimized for today’s televisions, computers, tablets, and phones.
This process delivers superior image quality while ensuring reliable playback and long-term compatibility on modern devices.
Optional 4K Archival Capture
For clients who wish to preserve their films at the highest possible resolution, we also offer true 4K archival capture. In this workflow, your film is recorded and delivered as a native 4K digital master, providing maximum detail and long-term preservation for future formats and displays. This service is ideal for historically significant footage, professional projects, or families seeking the most comprehensive archival solution.

Restoration & Enhancement
We use DaVinci Resolve Studio, the same industry-leading software trusted by Hollywood colorists, to perform precise color correction, exposure balancing, and scene-by-scene refinement. Our process also includes Neat Video’s advanced temporal and spatial filters, which analyze multiple frames to distinguish between real image detail and unwanted imperfections. This allows us to effectively remove dust and scratches, without sacrificing the integrity of the original footage. In addition, we apply subtle stabilization to reduce unwanted camera shake, helping each scene play more smoothly. The result is a cleaner, more polished presentation that preserves the authentic look of your memories while making them far more enjoyable to watch.

Old home movies are irreplaceable. Our film-transfer process is designed not only to digitize your movies, but to care for the physical film before it ever reaches our transfer equipment.
Every Film Is Prepared by Hand
Before your film is transferred, it is carefully inspected and prepared.
Unlike high-volume operations that may simply feed reels through an automated cleaning or scanning system, our film cleaning and preparation is performed by hand.
We believe this is especially important when dealing with family films that may be 50, 60, 70 years old or more.
These are not simply reels of film.
They may contain the only existing images of parents, grandparents, children, weddings, birthdays, vacations and family members who are no longer with us.
We treat them accordingly.
Hand Cleaning with FilmRenew
Our films are cleaned using FilmRenew, a professional motion-picture film cleaner and conditioner designed for older motion-picture film.
FilmRenew is a slow-drying penetrating film treatment that helps clean accumulated dirt and contaminants while also lubricating the film and helping older film remain pliable.
Each reel is carefully cleaned by hand, allowing us to visually inspect the film while it is being cleaned rather than simply passing it through an automated cleaning machine.
The process helps remove surface dirt and debris that could otherwise become visible during a high-resolution transfer.
Hand cleaning also gives us an opportunity to identify physical problems before the film enters the transfer equipment.
New Film Leader
Old leaders are frequently brittle, too short, damaged or completely missing.
When necessary, we install new film leader so the reel can be properly threaded and handled without sacrificing the first frames of your family's movie.
Broken Film and Splice Repair
Film that has been stored for decades frequently contains failed splices or sections that have physically separated.
Before transfer, we inspect for these problems and repair:
Broken film • Failed splices • Separated film sections • Damaged or missing leader
These repairs allow the film to travel safely through our transfer system and help prevent additional damage to the original reel.
The goal is simple: your film should leave our studio in better physical condition than when it arrived whenever practical
Professional Film Transfer Equipment
Once the film has been inspected, cleaned and repaired, it is ready for digitization.
Coppolo Studios uses specialized professional film-transfer equipment engineered in Germany specifically for motion-picture film digitization.
This is not a modified consumer projector pointed at a video camera.
Our system is designed specifically to capture motion-picture film digitally while maintaining precise film positioning and producing a high-resolution image of the original film frame.
True 4K Film Capture
Our films are captured using a 4K full-sensor imaging workflow.
The purpose of capturing at 4K is not simply to create a larger file. High-resolution capture allows us to preserve extremely fine details contained within the original photographic film image.
That can include:
Facial detail
Clothing texture
Signs and lettering
Architecture and scenery
Fine photographic grain
Subtle color information
Details that may be difficult to see when the original film is projected
This is particularly valuable with well-exposed Super 8 and 16mm film, which can contain considerably more visual information than older standard-definition video-transfer systems were capable of preserving.
Rather than limiting your family's films to yesterday's video-transfer technology, we capture them using a modern 4K digital imaging workflow designed for preservation today and into the future.
Super 8 Sound — No Extra Charge
If your Super 8 film contains a magnetic soundtrack, we can transfer the sound along with the picture.
And unlike some transfer services, we do not charge an additional fee simply because your Super 8 film contains sound.
When a usable soundtrack is present, the audio is captured and synchronized with the film so your digital copy preserves not only the images, but the voices, music and sounds recorded with them.
Finishing in DaVinci Resolve Studio
After capture, the film is imported into DaVinci Resolve Studio, one of the world's leading professional video finishing and color-grading platforms.
Every film is different.
Color film changes as it ages. Some reels remain remarkably vibrant after decades, while others may develop color shifts, fading or changes in contrast.
As part of our normal film-transfer process, we perform light color and image correction when appropriate.
Our objective is not to make old film look artificial or overly processed.
We want it to look like your film — only properly presented digitally.
Depending upon the condition of the material, adjustments may include:
Exposure
Contrast
White balance
Color balance
Saturation
Black and white levels
We deliberately distinguish this from our more extensive restoration services. A normal transfer receives appropriate finishing and correction; films requiring substantial restoration can receive additional specialized treatment.
Digital Delivery
For most customers, our normal delivery format is MP4 using H.264 compression.
MP4 provides an excellent combination of picture quality, manageable file size and virtually universal compatibility.
Your films can easily be watched on:
Smart TVs • Windows PCs • Macs • iPhones • Android phones • iPads • Tablets • Media players
They can also be copied to USB drives, external hard drives, home media servers and cloud storage.
4K Delivery Available
Customers who want to retain the full resolution of our 4K capture can request their movies as 4K digital files.
This is particularly useful for customers who want a higher-resolution preservation copy, plan to edit the films in the future, or simply want to retain as much information from the original scan as possible.
Professional and Archival File Formats Available
Because our films are finished through DaVinci Resolve Studio, we are not limited to MP4.
Depending upon the intended use of the material, we can provide a number of professional digital formats, including:
MP4 / H.264
Our normal consumer delivery format. Excellent quality, relatively small files and broad compatibility.
H.265 / HEVC
A newer compression format capable of maintaining excellent image quality at smaller file sizes, particularly useful for 4K delivery.
Apple ProRes
A professional-quality format widely used by filmmakers, editors, production companies and archives. Available in several quality levels, including ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ.
Avid DNxHR / DNxHD
High-quality professional post-production formats commonly used for editing and preservation workflows.
Uncompressed Video
Available for specialized archival and professional applications where file size is secondary to maintaining an extremely high-quality digital master.
QuickTime / MOV
A professional container that can hold formats such as Apple ProRes and uncompressed video.
MXF
A professional media container commonly used in broadcast, institutional and professional production environments.
DPX, TIFF and Other Image Sequences
Available for specialized archival, restoration and motion-picture post-production applications.

Personal Care for Irreplaceable Films
There are faster ways to digitize motion-picture film.
Our goal is not to be the fastest.
Our goal is to do it properly.
Your films are individually handled, inspected, cleaned and prepared before transfer. Damaged areas are repaired when needed. Missing or damaged leaders are replaced. The film is then captured using specialized professional equipment at high resolution and professionally finished before delivery.
From the physical reel to the final digital file, your family's films remain under the personal care of Coppolo Studios.
