Video Tape Transfer
At Coppolo Studios, we believe your family’s home videos deserve more than a quick “dub and dump” transfer. Unlike mass-production transfer houses, our video tape transfer service treats every tape like it’s our own — carefully captured, thoughtfully enhanced, and returned in a format ready to enjoy on today’s TVs, computers, and smart devices.
All our videotape transfers are done using top-of-the-line video decks, routed through time-base correctors (TBCs) to stabilize the signal and ensure the cleanest possible capture. Footage is then digitized and delivered in Full HD (1080p) and professionally refined in DaVinci Resolve, where we correct color fading and white balance, reduce analog noise and grain, adjust framing and aspect ratio for proper display on modern screens, and balance audio levels for clear, consistent sound throughout.
Videotape Transfer Workflow
Inspect
Unlike film, videotapes weren’t built to last forever—magnetic tape naturally breaks down with age. While most tapes we receive are in good enough shape to digitize right away, roughly 1 in 5 arrive with issues such as mold, mildew, or weakened and broken tape. The good news: our team has successfully repaired and restored more than 90% of these damaged tapes. Every transfer begins with a careful inspection. Each tape is checked for mold, mildew, or other contaminants that may have developed over decades of storage. We also look for fragile or ‘sticky’ tape—a common condition caused by heat or humidity—which can permanently damage your footage if played without treatment.
Repair
The good news is that we know how to clean and restore video tapes. If your tape has mold, mildew, broken splices, weakened sections, or a damaged shell, we can fix it before transfer. Mold and mildew are safely removed with a professional-grade solution that won’t harm the tape, and if needed, we can even re-house the tape into a brand-new shell. Over the years, we’ve had great success reviving tapes many thought were beyond saving—or even thrown away. Most transfer houses don’t even touch moldy or damaged tapes. We do—mold removal and tape repair are just $25 per tape.
Digitize
Once your tapes are inspected and repaired, we begin the digitization process using professional playback decks paired with professional capture hardware. Your footage is then captured in real time and converted into high-quality digital files. During this stage, we correct issues such as tracking errors, audio sync problems, and signal noise, ensuring a faithful transfer. By starting with the best playback equipment and capture methods, we create a strong foundation for the enhancement and restoration steps that follow.
