Professional Film Transfer

Your film reels hold more than images—they hold family stories, milestones, and memories too important to fade with time. At Coppolo Studios, we treat every reel as an archive, beginning with a careful inspection and cleaning process to ensure it’s safe for transfer. If damage is found, we can repair and splice the film so it runs smoothly before scanning. Using precision optics and advanced full-frame capture, we digitize your film with leading-edge, specialized transfer systems engineered by film-scanning specialists—revealing details projectors often miss.

Once digitized, your film is transferred in stunning Full HD quality (1080p), ensuring a crisp, vibrant result for today’s screens. We then refine every film transfer using the same professional-grade software trusted in Hollywood post-production. Our process balances color and exposure, stabilizes motion, and removes dust and scratches with advanced AI technology. The outcome is a true-to-life yet rejuvenated version of your original reels—restored with care, ready to share today, and preserved for generations to come. Inspect & Clean

At Coppolo Studios, we begin every film transfer with a meticulous inspection and hand-cleaning process. Your film is gently cleaned using a safe, professional-grade solution designed specifically for archival film. This is the same solution trusted by professional film archives, and it not only removes dust, dirt, and debris before transferring but also helps condition the film itself. By renewing the emulsion and lubricating the surface, the treatment reduces wear during playback and prevents further deterioration over time.

Each reel is examined for splices, warping, or other damage, and if needed, repairs are made before the transfer begins. This step prevents interruptions during scanning and ensures smooth, continuous playback. Our careful preparation often reveals hidden detail that would otherwise remain obscured, allowing your digitized film to shine with improved clarity. This extra care ensures your film is not only digitized in the best possible condition but also preserved for generations to come.

Repair & Restore

During this stage, we also assess for any physical damage—repairing crimped or torn sections and splicing separated pieces whenever possible*. If your film is warped or heavily crimped, we often take the extra step to carefully straighten and restore the film so it can run smoothly through our transfer system. We’ve even had success removing mold from film, helping to recover images that might otherwise have been lost. If your film is missing its original leader, we attach a new safety leader to ensure smooth handling and protection during the transfer process.

Every repair is completed by hand, using professional splicing tapes and tools specifically designed for archival film. This careful attention prevents damage during scanning and preserves the integrity of your footage. In cases where the emulsion has begun to separate, we take steps to stabilize the film, ensuring that valuable frames are not lost during transfer. Our goal is always to recover as much of the original material as possible, even from reels that may look too far gone.

*Minor film repairs are always included at no extra charge. If your film has severe damage that requires extensive work, we’ll provide a custom quote before proceeding.

Capture & Digitize

Whether it’s Regular 8, Super 8, or 16mm, every reel entrusted to us is transferred using professional film-to-digital telecine equipment designed specifically for archival preservation. Unlike basic projector transfers that can crop the image or introduce distortion, our system captures the entire film frame—often revealing more of the original picture—without flicker, warping, or blown-out highlights. The result is a natural, true-to-life representation of your film, just as it was meant to be seen.

Your film is illuminated using a cool, flicker-free LED light source rather than hot projector bulbs, eliminating the risk of heat damage and ensuring even, balanced exposure from edge to edge. This gentle, controlled process protects your originals while producing clean, stable images with consistent color and brightness.

Every film we transfer is professionally captured using a 4K-capable cinema camera and precision optics to extract the maximum detail from your original film. That high-resolution capture is then carefully downsampled and mastered in Full HD (1080p), producing a beautifully clean, sharp, and stable image optimized for today’s televisions, computers, tablets, and phones.

This process delivers superior image quality while ensuring reliable playback and long-term compatibility on modern devices.

Optional 4K Archival Capture

For clients who wish to preserve their films at the highest possible resolution, we also offer true 4K archival capture. In this workflow, your film is recorded and delivered as a native 4K digital master, providing maximum detail and long-term preservation for future formats and displays. This service is ideal for historically significant footage, professional projects, or families seeking the most comprehensive archival solution.

4K archival capture is available by request. Please contact us for details and a custom quote.

Restoration & Enhancement

We use DaVinci Resolve Studio, the same industry-leading software trusted by Hollywood colorists, to perform precise color correction, exposure balancing, and scene-by-scene refinement. Our process also includes Neat Video’s advanced temporal and spatial filters, which analyze multiple frames to distinguish between real image detail and unwanted imperfections. This allows us to effectively remove dust and scratches, without sacrificing the integrity of the original footage. In addition, we apply subtle stabilization to reduce unwanted camera shake, helping each scene play more smoothly. The result is a cleaner, more polished presentation that preserves the authentic look of your memories while making them far more enjoyable to watch.

Our Videotape Transfer Process

At Coppolo Studios, we believe your family’s home videos deserve more than a quick “dub and dump” transfer. Unlike mass-production transfer houses, we treat every tape like it’s our own — carefully captured, thoughtfully enhanced, and returned in a format ready to enjoy on today’s TVs, computers, and smart devices.

All our videotape transfers are done using top-of-the-line video decks, routed through time-base correctors (TBCs) to stabilize the signal and ensure the cleanest possible capture. Footage is then digitized and delivered in Full HD (1080p) and professionally refined in DaVinci Resolve, where we correct color fading and white balance, reduce analog noise and grain, adjust framing and aspect ratio for proper display on modern screens, and balance audio levels for clear, consistent sound throughout.

Videotape Transfer Workflow

Inspect

Unlike film, videotapes weren’t built to last forever—magnetic tape naturally breaks down with age. While most tapes we receive are in good enough shape to digitize right away, roughly 1 in 5 arrive with issues such as mold, mildew, or weakened and broken tape. The good news: our team has successfully repaired and restored more than 90% of these damaged tapes. Every transfer begins with a careful inspection. Each tape is checked for mold, mildew, or other contaminants that may have developed over decades of storage. We also look for fragile or ‘sticky’ tape—a common condition caused by heat or humidity—which can permanently damage your footage if played without treatment.

Repair

The good news is that we know how to clean and restore video tapes. If your tape has mold, mildew, broken splices, weakened sections, or a damaged shell, we can fix it before transfer. Mold and mildew are safely removed with a professional-grade solution that won’t harm the tape, and if needed, we can even re-house the tape into a brand-new shell. Over the years, we’ve had great success reviving tapes many thought were beyond saving—or even thrown away. Most transfer houses don’t even touch moldy or damaged tapes. We do—mold removal and tape repair are just $25 per tape.

Digitize

Once your tapes are inspected and repaired, we begin the digitization process using professional playback decks paired with professional capture hardware. Your footage is then captured in real time and converted into high-quality digital files. During this stage, we correct issues such as tracking errors, audio sync problems, and signal noise, ensuring a faithful transfer. By starting with the best playback equipment and capture methods, we create a strong foundation for the enhancement and restoration steps that follow.

Negatives

Almost every family has boxes of photos, slides, and negatives tucked away—precious memories that rarely see the light of day. They’re often unorganized, making them difficult to enjoy or share. But once digitized, your photos become easy to access, view instantly, and share with loved ones on your smartphone, tablet, computer, or TV.

It’s important to act now—physical photos don’t last forever. Over time they can fade, discolor, or suffer from damage like water or mold. At Coppolo Studios, we not only digitize your photos but also restore them using state-of-the-art AI technology. From correcting age and water damage to enhancing clarity and even colorizing old black-and-white photos, we bring your memories back to life with stunning results.

Best of all, our service is simple and stress-free. You don’t need to label, sort, or organize anything before sending—just pack your photos, slides, and negatives in a protective box and mail them to us. Once digitized, organizing becomes much easier, and you’ll have the peace of mind knowing your family memories are preserved for generations to come.
